Dana S110 Axle Identification and Parts
The Dana S110 is a medium-duty rear axle built for Class 4–5 trucks, not Jeep CJs. Ford used it under F-450 and F-550 Super Duty chassis cabs in the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s. Dana rates the S110 at 15,500 lb GAWR. It is a dropout (banjo) 3rd-member design: the gear set lives in a removable carrier, not behind a Salisbury-style bolt-on cover like a Dana 60.
If you are re-gearing for larger tires, restoring tow RPM, or replacing a worn set, start with the Dana S110 ring and pinion page and a master install kit (bearings, shims, seals). Do not mix S110 gears with S111, S130, or Dana 80 parts.
How to identify a Dana S110
Confirm the axle before you order. Super Duty rears in this era can be an S110, S111, S130, or an older Dana 80.
- Dropout 3rd member — the carrier unbolts from the housing as a unit
- 12.25" (311 mm) hypoid ring gear
- 12 ring-gear bolts on a conventional (non Trac-Lok) case
- 34-spline pinion
- No carrier break across the ratios we stock
- Dana BOM tag on the housing; Ford door-jamb axle codes also list ratio
The earlier Dana 80 has an 11.25" ring gear. The S130/S135 family is larger still. If the truck is a 2005–2016 F-450/F-550 and the carrier drops out of a banjo housing with a ~12.25" gear, you are looking at an S110 (or the close S111 flange-carrier variant — verify before buying).
Gear ratios
We stock Dana S110 ring and pinion in 3.73, 4.11, 4.30, 4.56, and 4.88. Numerically higher ratios (4.30–4.88) help a chassis cab with larger tires or a heavy trailer get off the line without lugging. 3.73 and 4.11 are the usual factory-style replacements. These sets need a proper setup: backlash, pinion depth, and bearing preload. Use a master install kit rather than reusing crushed collapsible spacers or worn bearings.
Vehicle applications
The Dana S110 was commonly found as the rear axle on:
- 2004–2015 Ford F-450 Super Duty, rear
- 2005–2016 Ford F-550 Super Duty, rear
- Other Class 4–5 Ford, Ram, and GM medium-duty / vocational chassis (confirm S110 vs S111 / S130 on the tag)
